Oil on canvas

Collection of the National Gallery of Indonesia.
The majority of Hendra's painting depict objects of people's lives, such as revealing women's daily activities. This work shows the activities (buying and selling) in the 1960s market. In the foreground, two female figures are wearing kemben (traditional tube top) with a jarik cloth as the bottom. They are selling goods. In the background, the activities of several women are depicted by simplification of forms. Through the deformation of shapes, colors, and strokes, Hendra is able to give a lively rhythm to his works.
